Drones Can Infiltrate Your Smartphone's WiFi

3/21/2014

Picture
Even scarier than stores tracking you through your Smartphone's WiFi is knowing that miniature drones could be flying overhead while your walking outside.

This is definitely a much better reason to make sure that your phone's WiFi is shut off when you leave your house.

That includes the sites you visit, credit card information entered or saved on different sites, location data, usernames and passwords. Each phone has a unique identification number, or MAC address, which the drone uses to tie the traffic to the device. -Erika Fink

Millions of people use a VPN service to protect their privacy, but not all VPNs are as anonymous as one might hope. In fact, some VPN services log users' IP-addresses for weeks. To find out how secure VPNs really are TorrentFreak asked the leading providers about their logging policies, and more. -Ernesto

The pictures and verbiage below came to me in an email and I decided to share it with our audience.

"A man wrote a letter to a small hotel in a Midwest
town he planned to visit on his  vacation.
He wrote: I would very much like to bring my dog
with me. He is well-groomed and very well behaved.
Would you be willing to permit me  to keep him in my
room with me at night?"

An immediate reply came from the hotel owner, who wrote:

SIR: "I've been operating this hotel for many years.
In all that time, I've never had a dog steal towels,
bedclothes, silverware or steal pictures off the walls
or use them as a coloring book.

I've never had to evict a dog in the middle of the night
for being drunk and disorderly.
And I've never had a dog run out on a hotel bill.
Yes, indeed, your dog is welcome at my hotel.
And, if your dog will vouch for you, you're welcome to
stay here, too."

Free PdaNet+ Allows WiFi Tethering via USB or Bluetooth

10/30/2013

Picture
This is for our Android users who haven't rooted their phone but would like to use WiFi tethering without paying the cell carrier an additional $25 to $30 per month.

The free PDA-NET+ allows you to use WiFi tethering via USB or Bluetooth connection without the phone being rooted (download > Google's Play Store).

Watch the video below to see how to download and install PdaNet+ if your carrier blocks the app (they'll do that to force you to pay their monthly fee).  FlippySize will also show you some of the settings to enable and/or change.

PicturePay $7.95 for unlock key.
Now, as FlippySize mentions during his video, you may not get the WiFi to work (compatibility check).  If not, then use the USB/Bluetooth mode.  Or, you can simulate a "wireless" connection by using the Bluetooth mode.  All you need is something like this from Amazon for your PC/laptop.

The free version has a usage limit that requires you to restart PDA-NET+ to continue using it.  If the free version works to your satisfaction then I'd recommend that you purchase the full version key to unlock the usage limitation.  It's a one time cost of $7.95 and is well worth it versus paying your carrier's monthly fees.

Retail Stores Track You via Your Smartphone's WiFi

7/22/2013

PictureEuclid taps smartphone WiFi to track you.
My wife can verify that when we bought our first HTC EVO 4G smartphones (Jan. 2011), that I was a strong believer in rooting our phones and making sure that the WiFi is OFF when we left our house (more rooting info).

Of course I didn't know for sure that stores were tracking us through our Smartphones. But, I was aware that as long as our phones were sending out a signal to connect through WiFi, someone could try to use it against us.

Don't forget that other businesses can implement the same tactics as the stores (eg: restaurants & cafes).

If you don't want to be tracked while you're out-n-about, simply shut your phone's WiFi off when you leave your house (it saves your battery as well).

When you walk into a brick and mortar retail store like a Nordstrom, Cabela, or even Family Dollar, you're being tracked around the store. Not by an over-suspicious security guard, but by the store's wireless network, using your phone's Wi-Fi. The store then uses your phone to track you around the store, determine if you're a repeat visitor, see what departments you visit, and more. -Alan Henry

Top 7 Reasons That I Prefer Private Internet Access

6/14/2013

VPN = Private Internet Access (PIA)

I've used several different VPNs (Virtual Private Networks) over the years, but ever since I started using Private Internet Access in January 2013... I've never looked back.

Top 7 Reasons That I Prefer PIA

  1. Simple to use interface.
  2. Not a computer/smartphone resource hog while it runs in the background.
  3. Does not store log files of your internet activity, ever.
  4. Inexpensive yearly cost.
  5. Can be used on 5 of your devices simultaneously (eg: PCs, laptops, smartphones & tablets).
  6. Encrypted WiFi.
  7. Unlimited bandwidth (over 5 devices).

Of course there are many other features that are useful but you can read through those on Private Internet Access' website.

Unsecured Public WiFi Connections

View Details
Whether you travel a lot or just prefer using public WiFi, you should definitely consider using Private Internet Access to secure your connection.

Who should consider adding strong public WiFi security encryption layers to protect your privacy and data?

That's an excellent question and the short answer is, "YOU".

Do you perform any of the following activities while using an unsecured public WiFi access point (eg: cafe, library, bookstore, airport or hotel)?
  • Check email.
  • Login to social network websites (eg: Twitter, Facebook, Google+ or Pinterest).
  • Share sensitive data.
  • Login to banking or credit card accounts.
  • Login to apps on your smartphone to watch programs/movies via; Netflix, Hulu+, M-Go, VuDu, Crackle, etc.

If you answered, "Yes" to one or more of above then you should sign-up without further delay to enjoy all the same benefits that I do.

Low Cost Peace Of Mind For 5 Devices

I recommend paying for the $39.95 yearly subscription because then you'll receive the lowest price possible.

Now, if you take the $3.33/month cost a step further and divide that by 5 devices, it's a mere $0.67/device each month.

If you're not 100% convinced, then sign-up for a month initially ($6.95).  You can always pay the yearly subscription after your 30 day test drive.

Watching Netflix With PIA App Loaded via 4GLTE

I load the Private Internet Access app on my smartphone even when I watch programs on Netflix via 4gLTE (while sitting in our vehicle and my wife is shopping).

It protects my privacy in 2 ways:
  • Stops nearby prying eyes who may be using spy software to intercept login information.
  • Prevents Netflix from tracking my actual location through their app.

How Do You Know If The VPN You Chose Is Trustworthy?

5/22/2013

I've read about why I really should use a VPN and I've been looking into different providers, but there's one thing I'm worried about. Can't a VPN provider just look at my traffic all they want and see what I'm doing? Don't I just have to trust them not to spy on me? If that's true, how do I pick one I can trust, when they can all see what I'm doing? -Alan Henry

Good Advice To Follow When Talking to a Sick Friend

4/13/2013

A closed mouth gathers no feet. It's a charming axiom, but silence isn't always an option when we're dealing with a friend who's sick or in despair.

The natural human reaction is to feel awkward and upset in the face of illness, but unless we control those feelings and come up with an appropriate response, there's a good chance that we'll blurt out some cringe-worthy cliché, craven remark or blunt question that, in retrospect, we'll regret. -Letty P.

Posting Too Much Info on Facebook Could Get You Robbed

11/28/2012

At minimum, you should keep your Facebook profile private to the public. Only allow your friends to view it, not friends of friends.

This is just one example of why posting too much information on Facebook is a bad idea.

Some users have posted their phone numbers, leaving them vulnerable to SMS scams.

Always keep privacy settings to 'friends only' if you don't want to broadcast what you post to the world.

Wasil Dhingra doesn't set his Facebook settings to 'private' or 'friends only.' So, it's not hard to find his phone number.

How to Keep Your Snow Blower From Clogging

11/10/2012

Picture
All of us may not have an awesome snow blower like the one you see to the right but there is something we can do to improve the output of the one we do own.

My main frustration each year when snow-blowing is that mother nature doesn't always offer dry, fluffy snow.  More than most snow falls have quite the opposite ingredients; wet, slushy and heavy snow that just barely chugs out of the chute.  This not only creates a dangerous situation in order to keep it clean but is extremely time consuming.

What would normally take 30 - 40 minutes for me to clean our driveway can take as long as 60 - 90 minutes depending upon how much snow we receive.

There is one simple improvement that can help a new or old snow-blower from clogging and throw the snow twice as far as before.  Please watch the video below.

Facebook Tracks Your Online and OFFline Activity

It's bad enough that what we do online is being tracked by Facebook. Now, they have the capabilities to track what you're doing when you're offline.

I don't know about you, but that's completely unacceptable to me.

Don't despair, you can stop it from happening by reading Thorin's article on LifeHacker.

As we mentioned, the way this data collection works is that it compares your online data with offline shopping habits. So, the easiest solution to keep it from happening? Don't use the same phone number or email address on your Facebook account as you do when you sign up for loyalty or discount cards. -Thorin Klosowski
